Early in 2014, freelance Energy Assessor Miguel Garcia funded The Energy Backyard to offer energy advice for households and services for rental and selling solutions.
Since then, Miguel Garcia has produced more than 1200 Energy Performance Certificates and Green Deal Advice Reports in London.
In the domestic sector, this experience ranges from brand new developments to Georgian houses. Miguel has worked with Estates Agents such as Haart and Barnard Marcus, social housing providers as Felsham Road Cooperative or energy companies as Evo Energy.
On the commercial side, Miguel has experience in shops, schools, industrial units, offices and clinics.
The main highlights of The Energy Backyard are the extensive knowledge in energy efficiency and practical customer service, delivering results with the minumum hassle. On the top of this, we are proud of contributing to society through different means.
Spanish born, Miguel completed a BA Degree in Physics in the University of Extremadura. These studies were complemented by a MA in Renewable Energy in the University of Leon, where Miguel learnt from well-known researchers in the energy sector, such as Eduardo Zarza and Manuel Romero from the Plataforma solar de Almeria, the largest research centre in the world dedicated to the technologies of concentrated solar radiation.
After these studies, Miguel worked at the Foundation City of Energy, responsible for the National Energy Museum and the management of the centre es.CO2, which develops research on Carbon Capture and Storage Technologies using a circulating fluidized bed boiler unique worldwide.
At the Foundation City of Energy Miguel had the opportunity to coordinate the project “Nearly-Zero Energy Hotels”, approved by Intelligent Energy Europe, in partnership with the World Tourism Organisation and REHVA, the European Federation of Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Engineers, between others. During this project Miguel discovered energy services companies, which allow customers to install energy efficiency measures without upfront costs, and repaying the loan through the savings.
When the climate for investment in renewable energy became difficult in Spain, Miguel travelled to UK attracted by the Green Deal scheme.
Once in the UK, Miguel worked with different companies and achieved the qualification of Green Deal Advisor. Miguel has improved the understanding on the British houses using 2 methods: research using a wide library and online resources, and learning from others assisting to energy workshops, forums and meetings with installers and professionals.
“The Energy Backyard has been set up to fill a gap between households willing to take control over their energy use and professional and installers who offer quality services. The transition towards a new energy model has already started, and The Energy Backyard is going to participate in it. If we want to achieve a reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, reduce our energy bills, increase the energy security and develop fair relationships, the only solution I can imagine implies the use of energy efficiency, renewable energy and participation. The future of our children depends on our actions today, so let´s make them proud of us.”
